What's New in This Release

Here is a summary of what's new in the recent release of Lightning beta:

We've added a new feature to Lightning in the latest release that allows you to send a note to your WordPress.com blog.

You can now add TXT and graphics files to your notebook. Drag a file from Windows Explorer or your desktop and drop it into your notebook. A note is created with the text/graphic contained within.

The Snapshot tool has been enhanced. You can now cancel a snapshot, pause it and use the keyboard to precisely manipulate each of the corners of your snapshot. I'll provide the details in the Tips and Tricks forum soon.

"Keep on Top" has been added to the notes window menu. When you choose this your note will stay to the top so it is always visible and just a click away. Choose the menu item again to turn it off.

You can now start a new note directly from IE and Firefox. Select some content in the browser window, right click and choose "Copy to Lightning Note" from the menu.

We've addressed some bugs with respect to the note window having focus when it should - for example when you start a new note you can start typing in it right away, you used to have to click in the note first. A few other issues of that sort have been taken care of.

Sometimes the Lightning Navigator would go off-screen - you could see it in your task bar but not see it in your screen. Solutions for getting it back were posted in the forums. With this release you should no longer see this problem.

We also fixed one issue that could cause note content to disappear.

Enjoy, Tom

Robert -

We're trying to track it down why there are people unable to access the online help. None of our testing exposed this issue but obviously a number of you are running into it.

Copy to Lightning Note in browser is a very good feature. But I noticed that the hyperlinks are not transferred. Also many times images within a Web page are not transferred.

Copy to Lighting Note in a browser is a good idea, but it would also be useful to have this show up in WordPerfect speed menus as well.  I know you can cut/paste, but having a direct send to lightning command would be useful.

Can notebooks contain metadata so original text can be indexed since snapshots are all images?

Is there an import feature? I have a large body of notes each with a subject line.

Lightning sounds great.  Is there some reason it's not available for Linux? That's the one thing that would make it a necessary app.

RickyClicnch: currently there is no way for Lihtning users to add metadata to their notes.

hparks: there is no note importing feature but we plans under consideration for something like that.

jack: right now our WordPerfect business, which Lightning is a part of, is Windows only. That's pretty much why there is no Linux or OS X version of Lightning.

A few other things were added to the beta, including:

Better Content Capture

● Drag and Drop: WordPerfect Lightning users can now drag and drop content from any web browser or productivity application into Lightning Notes. Drag-and-drop capabilities make it easier for PC users to capture more content, faster.

● Send to Note:  This update adds the ability to send selected content to WordPerfect Lightning by highlighting content and selecting "Send to Note" from the right click menu reducing the number of clicks required to capture content.

and more online services

● JAJAH Voice Communication: WordPerfect Lightning Online Services, delivered via the Joyent Connector, now includes integration with JAJAH. JAJAH enables users to make free and low cost telephone calls, locally or globally, dialing from either their computers or mobile phones. JAJAH integration means that users of WordPerfect Lightning Online Services can now make free and long distance calls over regular phones.

Would there be changes on the Joyent front in the future? It seems this beta did not change anything with regard to many suggestions on the display of content on Joyent Web.

The Snapshot feature is a wonderful addition to the toolbox, and being able to ESCape out of a screen capture is a great idea.

A problem came up when I tried to grab part of a Yahoo! map last night (viewed on Firefox v 2.0.0.4). While dragging a rectangle around the area I wanted, I saw that Snapshot was dropping copies of its dashed borders all through the area to be grabbed. These "border droppings" were all through the graphic, and ended up faithfully reproduced in the screen grab that Snapshot placed in the Lightning note.

Go to maps.yahoo.com and try a screen grab with Snapshot to see.
