New Lightning Beta Released Today

We've released another beta of WordPerfect Lightning this morning. The download is available here. Here's what's new:

Some users having been losing content from their notes. We worked hard on this and found a few issues that our internal testing has confirmed are now fixed. Let us know in the forums or in comments on this post if you still experience this problem. There may still be issues with some anti spyware applications that could be beyond our control, but we'll monitor this through your feedback.

Also improved is the 'send to email' functionality. There were cases of Lightning and/or email applications locking up under certain conditions and we have addressed these problems. While our focus and testing was with Outlook and Outlook Express, anecdotal evidence suggests that Lightning should work with Thunderbird as well.

We have made some enhancements in the online services area. We have streamlined the account creation process so it is easier to set up an account. For those of you doing this for the first time you will be able to choose your own password when setting up your account rather than getting one assigned to you. There is now direct access to your key online services from right within the Lightning Navigator toolbar.

This version of Lightning includes new update technology. If you choose to opt in to taking advantage of this technology during installation of Lightning, you'll be notified whenever an update is available. You'll be able to choose if and when to install the update and it will take place more or less in the background making the update process easy and painless.

With this release of Lightning there is also an add on module being released that allows you to send notes to MS Word and save notes as DOC files. The module is available for trial or purchase.

The message window at the bottom of the Lightning Navigator has been resized to take up less space on your screen.

There are other bug fixes in the release that should reduce flickering and improve performance.

Download. Install. Tell us what you think.

Enjoy!

Tom - I downloaded (what I thought was new version 1.0.0.428).

If this is the new version, the notes still disappear. If this is not the version, the link is not correct.

Robert, you should get version 1.0.0.465. Remove the old version (if you haven't) before installing the new one. Your data should all be maintained (though this is still beta). Future releases will take advantage of the update code we've added so uninstalling won't be necessary with typical updates anymore. This time you'll still need to uninstall the old before installing the new. Sorry I didn't mention that in the blog post.

I did uninstall and then reinstalled. Still version .428. The file dowloaded is exactly (to the byte) the same as in May.

The problem with double line spacing after a bullet list still holds. This was pointed out before, but it seems it is not considered a bug? Disappointed.

It is considered a bug but we weren't able to address it in time for this release. Sorry.

I just downloaded the new release and I'm having problems installing it.

I've uninstalled the previous version and rebooted. When I attempt to install the new version I get a window popup that's a program called "Cute Partion Manager". It wants me to create a CPM boot CD or DVD. Even when I select one of the options I get an error message telling me that there's a problem opening the file.

I then select the exit button and nothing else happens.

Just to confirm... you get WordPerfectLightningInstaller.exe, you run it and the Cute Partition Manager starts instead of the Lightning setup?

Yes. I've downloaded the update several times, uninstalled the previous version, left the previous version installed and tried and indeed a program called "Cute Partition Manager" starts up. This happens after the WordPerfectLightningInstaller.exe program starts running and extracting it's installation files.

BTW, I can't even find a program with that name anywhere on my computer.

After an exhaustive search I located an obscure folder that contained the Cute Partion Manager Program. I couldn't locate it in the registry or through the Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

I deleted the folder along with the program and the new updated Lightning Program finally installed.

Thanks for your trouble.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you resolved your problem. We will continue looking for possible reasons as to why the Lightning installer was triggering the installation of another application.

Are there any plans to incorporate an equation editor, at least the ability to properly display equations. In particular, I have a number of wordperfect files that contain numerous equation written using the old equation editior (the one I believe was for version 5.1 through 7 or thereabouts).

I'd have to say that an equation editor in Lightning is not being considered right now and I would guess it is probably unlikely addition only because working with equations is advanced and not common (I suspect) among Lightning users.
